This
programme is designed for students seeking proficiency
in English language. These programmes are ideal for
students wishing to take English exams or for those
wishing to go for higher study. Students will practice
reading, writing, communication, and structure as a
part of this integrated course. However, emphasis is
on presentation, report writing and communication skills
along with grammatical structures.
Course Details
If you are an international student with good academic
qualifications, but with a low level of English, this
one year programme can help you to develop both your
English language and study skills and enable you to
progress to a wide range of degree courses at the University.
The programme is designed to give you the confidence
and knowledge that you will need in order to begin to
study effectively in a new country
During the programme you will develop general English
language and study skills in the areas of reading, writing,
speaking and listening. You will also learn about how
to clearly understand the academic language that will
be used by your tutors and about how to study effectively
at a British university. At the same time you will be
introduced to British society and culture through the
use of materials found in British publications, recordings
and broadcasts. The programme is designed to improve
your English skills whilst helping you to settle into
in a new country and find out about differences in culture
and approaches to studying.
The one year programme is split into two Semesters
(1 and 2).
Course Structure
Semester1
General English A (Listening, speaking and pronunciation,
10 hours per week). Designed to help improve your general
listening skills as well as your speaking and pronunciation
skills.
General English B (Reading and writing, 10 hours per
week). Designed to help improve your general reading
skills including finding information and general writing
skills including vocabulary development.
Semester2
General English C (Speaking and listening, 3 hours per
week). Designed to build on the English skills developed
in Semester A and further develop your listening and
speaking skills.
Study and Research Skills (5 hours per week). Designed
to help improve your information collection skills,
extend your writing skills and use the University’s
Learning Resources Centre effectively.
English for Academic Purposes (12 hours per week).
Designed to help improve your reading, speaking and
listening skills, including giving presentations and
understanding lectures, as well as developing your academic
writing style for essays and dissertations.
Entry Requirements
A higher standard of English (IELTS 4.5/TOEFL
480/157 or equivalent).
